The aim of the Pier Group is to repair Largo Pier and restore it to its former importance as a focal point of the village, much loved by residents past and present, regular visitors and tourists.
WHAT HAS BEEN ACHIEVED
Since our formation as a sub group of LCT three years ago much has been achieved, a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with the Crusoe Hotel agreeing in principle that the Pier could be taken into community ownership when funds are available to restore the pier, a civil engineering design study has been produced, with fully costed proposals and this has been the subject of a consultation in the villages. We have undertaken temporary repairs to ensure the Pier does not suffer from winter storms.
We have completed a major fundraising appeal and the Group would like to express our grateful thanks to all those who contributed so generously. We were awarded funding of £5000 from Fife Coast and Countryside Trust who see the Pier as an important amenity on the Coastal Path and an obvious tourism asset for the local community. We have also received a grant from the Crown Estates fund.
Since our last update, this time last year, The Largo Pier sub-group of LCT want to advise the general public and potential funders on progress to date to maintain and restore the pier to its former self. This year has seen continued, diligent effort from the whole volunteer team to guide the project forward to completion.
As always, the generous financial and moral support from the local community and further afield has been much appreciated and this has continued throughout 2023 and is ongoing. This support, in addition to already-secured grants and 3rd party funding, has enabled the Pier Group to successfully reach the position where it now has a design springboard to move forward to the next stages of securing restoration funding.
In order to limit some escalating costs, the Pier Group have taken the decision to further consult with other engineers to secure a sustainable and cost-effective plan for the final reconstruction stage.
This means there will be a delay in the final go-ahead to proceed with the completion work until Spring 2025.
The Pier Group will continue to ensure that all donations and funding grants are used effectively in creating a future-proof pier construction.
